(Magnetics, Statistics)
A magnetics products client had some favorable test results data relating permeability (m) to DC magnetizing force (H). The data seemed to visually fit a particular type of curve. They wished to take advantage of this and develop an algorithm and equation to include in product documentation.

The client had tried conventional curve fits without success. S&ST was brought on board at that point. We first used an equation found in the existing Magnetics literature and then used an advanced minimization technique to determine the coefficients. An even better fit was found by adapting and modifying curves generated from equations found in statistical analysis.

This "customized" form of the equation works beautifully and allows the client to publish the equation for its own customers. After a small amount of technical support (no charge), the client was able to use the computer program we provided to automatically and instantaneously output m values for input H or vice versa. Some of the specific items addressed included:

  • Adapting DSP software and algorithms
  • Cubic and Bi-Cubic Splines
  • Cumulative and Gaussian Distributions
  • FFT Upsampling and Downsampling
  • Nelder-Meade Downhill Simplex
  • Numerical Integration and Differentiation
  • Optimal Data Smoothing
  • Polynomial and Parabolic Interpolation
  • Probability Density
  • Zero-Pad FFT methods
Complete documentation, including annotated graphics, was provided by Fax to the client immediately after any results were obtained and then presented on disk for later inclusion in the client's own documentation. The client has expressed satisfaction and gratitude for both the quality and the fast response.

This same client had used the technical consulting services of S&ST before on a commercial satellite antenna system. They were pleased with the results of this earlier task and looked to S&ST for help in their new business area of magnetics. They have indicated they would be most happy to serve as a reference to anyone for our services.
