A biomedical-devices client needed help with some optical signal processing. After meeting with them it became apparent that some of the image processing techniques used by orbiting satellites over a (somewhat) round earth might be adapted to small sensors near a (somewhat) round human eyeball. S&ST was put under contract to provide help with some difficult and unique challenges in the measurements of the various transparent, opaque, and colored surfaces. We were able to successfully adapt varied techniques from NASA, NOAA, and other open-literature sources. Some of the specific items addressed included: |
 |
 |
|
- Data conversion utilizing existing satellite signal processing software
- Edge detection using Median Filters ARMA, and other filtering techniques
- High-speed FFT/overlap-add convolution methods
- Advanced filtering techniques ( > 30 methods analyzed to find optimum)
|
- Other advanced Digital and Image Processing techniques
- Polynomial curve fits and Bi-Cubic splines for optimal smoothing
- Various histogram and thresholding methods
- 3-D data portrayal (Landscape, Color, Shaded, Mesh, Contour, Vertical, Horizontal, etc.)

S&ST was able to arrange meetings at the client's facility with other experts to help them in fields outside our expertise. In addition to procuring the needed literature and talent, we were also able to clearly explain each concept. S&ST was often included in meetings with medical professionals, investors, and other engineers to answer technical questions, and to provide continued support. On occasion, we would travel out of state to support the client or to act as liaison as needed.
S&ST first helped develop the needed algorithms and methods to model the system and to interface with the existing optical hardware. Next we were able to help specify the exact hardware (sensors, "frame grabbers", illumination, etc.) and software for the production system. We then performed a complete parallel proof of concept using mathematical simulations vs. observed data. We helped develop presentation-quality software for future use in the GUI and marketing. A graphic from S&ST was chosen as the background for the client's sales brochure.
This client has since been successfully acquired by a larger company, but individuals from the original firm may be contacted for recommendations of the services provided by S&ST.
